Boarder Zone, or Supreme Snowboarding (so the European title) blew me away when it was released back in 1999. Yes, this year marks its 10th anniversary, and for a video game that's always something - if they are remembered, that is.

Well, Boarder Zone never was a big hit to begin with, but one of those insider tips and an instant cult classic within (the few) fans. Today, I occasionally start up the game for a quick race or two...

Graphics: 10/10 back then, today it looks naturally dated. But not quite as dated as other games from '99 (e.g.: Game: Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, Game: Star Wars: Episode I - Racer, Game: Half-Life: Opposing Force). Also, You have the option to pick several rendering modes (DirectX6, DirectX7, OpenGL, or software), as well as any resolution that your graphics card supports. Commendable for a 10 year old game! You're able to play it in 1680x1050 without distortion. A+

Sound: Nothing fancy here, rather the absolute minimum. But that is not to say the sound is bad. Yes, it's scarce, but still gives to the atmosphere of the game. Music came on the CD in red book standard. But since you don't need the CD to play the game (or to install it, for that matter; you simply copy the install dir and you're done) I haven't listened to it in years. Winamp in the background does the trick.

Controls: 4 arrow keys, plus Shift, Ctrl and Alt, that's it. And it works. Although somewhat hard to coordinate for a jump at first. (You can't steer while powering up for a jump.)

Story: What story? There isn't any. But there doesn't need to be one anyway, not for a fun racer like this. Actually, there is the typical tournament mode for unlocking boards and tracks, but modifying the .ini file is quicker and more fun, as the computer opponents are pretty good racers.

Fun: It's great fun. Time Attack or Arcade mode are quick and easy, but it probably won't hold your attention for too long. But yes, it has a multiplayer mode as well.

Replay: As I said, I've owned this game for almost 10 years now, and I still play it from time to time, if only for a handful of races. But damn, beating the built-in highscores is almost impossible!

Now, let's see how it competes with Game: Shaun White Snowboarding
