I've seen people go to stage 50 or so (I have the replays) and it looks so easy when they play. I'm lucky if I get it past 15 myself though

No it's just this one cannon. Once you switch to multi-directional mode, you can adjust the spread of it (which you can't in normal mode). But that's about it :]
